Almost everyone has experienced a hangover at some stage. And whether it’s a little bit of tiredness, a pounding headache or a queasy stomach – whatever your post cocktail curse may be – one thing’s for certain, hangovers aren’t fun!
The good news?
There are some simple tricks you can do to help cure a hangover, so you can enjoy the vino and the next day too!
Sleep – Some much-needed pillow time will help to minimise symptoms of tiredness and exhaustion, giving your body the time it needs to recover! No time for a sleep in? Try and squeeze in a mid-day nap to make up some precious zzz time. Also, be sure to hit the hay early the following night to aid your body’s recovery.
Food – Eating something while being hungover can be an extremely difficult task for some. If you’re one of these people, try starting off with something bland and work yourself up to foods with a bit more sustenance. Which foods are best? While your immediate temptation might be salt or carbs, opting for a healthier choice will leave you feeling a whole lot better! Try bananas, eggs, watermelon or smashed avocado on toast with a pinch of sea salt, if you’re feeling fancy.
Hydration – This is one of the most important things you can do to help minimise the impact of a hangover. When you drink excess alcohol, your body becomes extremely dehydrated and can bring on additional symptoms that worsen the effects (hello, headache). Try to get rehydrated with either water, coconut water or a thirst-quenching green juice!
No caffeine! – While coffee might make you feel more alert – it will also make you more dehydrated. Stick to water and green tea for a more hydrating caffeine kick.
Detox bath – A detox bath with Epsom salts could be exactly what you need. Relax, unwind and let the salts soothe your aching body and muscles!**
Exercise – Look, exercise probably won’t be fun for the first ten minutes – but after that it’s smooth sailing! If you’re not feeling up to strenuous exercise, a light walk or even some gentle Pilates movements can help to lift your mood and ease any aches or pains. Again, no matter what exercise you opt for, it’s extremely important to ensure you are well hydrated beforehand and be sure to keep the water coming both during your workout and post.
Prevention – This is undoubtedly the most fool proof way to avoid a hangover. Try alternating your alcoholic drinks with water and remain mindful of your drink count to avoid over indulgence. Your body will thank you for it later!
When following these guidelines, it’s extremely important to remember that everyone is different and what works for someone else may not work for you! Listen to your body and be kind to yourself!
